About This Experience

There's something really special about watching a movie outdoors, under the stars, with the buzz of the city in the background. Whether it's an indie gem or a big blockbuster, Berlin's open-air cinemas turn a simple film night into a summer memory. It's cozy, a bit nostalgic, and such a great way to slow down and enjoy the warm evenings with friends or on your own.

One of the Best Berlin Summer Things

Freiluftkinos (open-air cinemas) are honestly such a lovely way to enjoy Berlin in the summer. We recently went to see Mickey 17 at Freiluftkino Kreuzberg and it was a great experience! The whole atmosphere feels cozy and relaxed—even though the forecast said rain, we got lucky with clear skies in the evening.

Popular Locations

  • Freiluftkino Kreuzberg – Right in the heart of Kreuzberg
  • Freiluftkino Friedrichshain – In beautiful Volkspark Friedrichshain
  • Freiluftkino Hasenheide – Nestled inside Hasenheide park in Neukölln
  • Freiluftkino Rehberge – Surrounded by greenery in Wedding

What to Expect

Most films are shown in their original language with German subtitles, which I personally love. We arrived about an hour early hoping to grab good deck chairs, but they only let people in around 30 minutes before the screening. Still, we managed to get two and find a nice spot.

There was a small kiosk selling popcorn, pretzels, and drinks—so cozy. The popcorn and pretzels were actually really fresh and tasty, and it just added to the charm of the night.

Making the Most of Your Visit

Bring a blanket or an extra layer—it got a bit chilly by the end, and I was really glad we had something to snuggle into. They were offering blankets too, but they're limited or not always available. Also, deck chairs can run out quickly, so try to be there on time; otherwise, you might end up with a plastic chair.

Only downside: the smoking. Not everyone is mindful of others, and since smoking is allowed, it can get annoying if you're not into it. Something to keep in mind when choosing where to sit but still it might not also help.

All in all, it's such a wholesome Berlin summer activity. We'd definitely go again and want to try out the other Freiluftkino spots too.

Best Time

Freiluftkino season runs from May to September, and screenings usually start around sunset. Perfect for those golden-hour summer evenings.

Insider Tip

Arrive early for popular films, especially on weekends. They usually accept card payments, but bringing cash is a safe bet just in case.
